Persona Information:
Margaret was born late in the Year of Our Lord 1545 at Nunraw Abbey, near
Garvald, East Lothian. Her mother, Madeleine Guinefort de Joinville, came
to Scotland as a sempstress in the retinue of Marie de Guise, from an
impoverished gentry family who had long worked in the de Guise household.
Her father, Andrew, was a lawyer employed by the Lord Lyon King of Arms,
known for his skill as a scribe. At 12 Margaret was fostered out to the
Seton household, Lady Seton being the former Marie Pierres, a French lady
in waiting to Marie de Guise. After Marie de Guise's death, Margaret and
her mother travelled to France to spend time with family. Andrew brought
them back to Scotland when Madeleine attempted to contract a marriage
for Margaret with a French cousin. Soon after, Margaret returned to France
to the strict household of Antoinette de Guise, after an indiscretion
with a Hepburn cousin. Her father contracted a marriage for her with a
son of the Montgomerie family, Simon Fraser Montgomerie, who had been
educated in Paris at the Scots College. They wed in Paris and lived there
until 1572. They returned to the east coast of Scotland, to the Ayrshire
town of Ardrossan, in the Valley of the Clyde. After the birth of their
son, Jacob, they moved to a small manor on a farm in the Ayrshire countryside.
Redstanes House at Westermarch farm is now also home to Kitty and Bet,
two Fraser cousins who act as nursemaid to young Jacob and
personal maid to Margaret, respectively, and young William Montgomerie,
the son of Simon's second eldest brother, who has been fostered to their
household.
