A guide to workable, budget conscious, ready-made garb pieces from
Dharma Trading Co for the SCA
newbie
All pieces are white, PFD (which means prepared for dyeing) and can
be dyed to whatever colours suit your fancy, and you can put on trims
if you like. This won't be 'authentic' clothing by any means, but will
give you a more medievalish looking place to start from than sweatpants
and a tshirt or a Gunnesax prom dress from Goodwill. At worst, you'll
have some nice basics that you can use in everyday life if you don't want
to play SCA later on, and at best you will have some durable camping garb
for setup and takedown, even when you have graduated to something more
authentic.
These should be layered for the most period effect. A longsleeve gown
under a shortsleeve tunic or sleeveless overdress, is good typical medievalish
look for ladies and a tunic over pants or leggings is a good typical medievalish
look for men. Look at pictures for more ideas. Older girls should be dressed
like ladies and older boys like men, but small children can wear shorter
clothes and noone will blink an eye. Older girls can wear veils if they
like, but I'd bet they won't want to. :)
If you want to avoid knits (Knits being inauthentic and somewhat obviously
so, although knit leggings are worn widely and are comfortable and durable),
these are flagged with either 'JERSEY' or 'KNIT'. Items
available in plus sizes are marked with a '+', and one size fits all items
are marked '1size'.
I don't have any relationship with Dharma Trading Co other than as a
satisfied and happy repeat customer. I still buy fabric and ready-made
veils from them.
